Welcome to Utah Wildflowers

Utah Wildflower Identification

I’ve tried to make this site useful for the casual wildflower observer. It’s made for the person who for the first time has seen an unknown wildflower and wonders what the plant’s name is.

It’s not hard, but you have to learn just a few techniques to help you identify the wildflowers you have seen. Please take a moment to look at the identification section. It is a good place to start when you want to learn how to identify a wildflower.

Happy Mother’s Day

Sunday, May 13, 2012

It’s Mother’s Day and here is the flower for today. It’s called Pale Stickseed and stands several feet tall. From a distance you notice the white flowers waving in the breeze. Up close, the white flowers tinged with blue are beautiful.

What’s Blooming in Park City?

Thursday, May 10, 2012

I went for a ride this evening. A wonderful 24-7 / Flying Dog / Glen Wild / Bob’s Basin Loop. The trails are fast. Here’s a list of the most plentiful blooming flowers:

There were also a handful of Glacier lilies and one solitary Desert paintbrush.

Violets

Tuesday, May 08, 2012

The weather has been beautiful in Park City and a wonderful number of new wildflower continue to make their appearance. Another early bloomer is the goosefoot violet. There are several violet species in Utah and some can be found in close proximity to one another. Nuttall’s violet is another violet that can be seen in Utah. The picture here is a goosefoot violet.

It’s one of my favorites because I get to call it a “yellow violet”….

I went for a hike yesterday and hidden in with the Utah Buttercups and the Glacier Lilies was this little gem. It’s called Steer’s Head… for obvious reasons.

Enjoy!

Fritillaria

Sunday, April 29, 2012

I went for a morning walk yesterday and I came across a field of Fritillaria pudicaThese are one of my favorite spring flowers. They flower yellow but then fade to an interesting combination of orange and yellow.
